Existing fire precautions legislation.

The Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 2001 (together with the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations) place a duty on employers to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment of their Workplace and to take appropriate action to counter the fire hazards and the risks to life. The findings of the fire risk assessment must be recorded if there are 5 or more employees.

In order to comply with the Regulations as an employer you must:

· Appoint a competent person to assist in carrying out your fire risk assessment
· Carry out a Fire Risk Assessment of your Workplace
· Identify fire hazards and risks to life
· Identify any person who may be at significant risk
· Identify the significant findings of the Fire Risk Assessment
· Provide and maintain the necessary Fire Precautions identified by the assessment
· Prepare an Emergency Plan
· Provide information instruction and training to your employees regarding all fire precautions
· Keep appropriate records
· Review the fire risk assessment when necessary and at periodic intervals

The Regulations state that a “competent person” must carry out the fire risk assessment. This may be one or more of your employees if they have the relevant skills. A competent person is deemed to be someone who has fire safety training, knowledge, experience and skills.

Are you ready for a significant change in fire precautions legislation?

Fire precautions legislation is due to change in NI to bring the NI legislation into line with UK legislation.

The Fire and Rescue Services Order 2006 is already commenced and this will be followed by The Fire Safety (NI) Regulations 2006 (not yet commenced)

This will require all employers to carry out a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment of their workplace and to ensure there is an tolerable risk to life.

Any assessment carried out by ARMA Fire Safety now will be deemed suitable when the new legislation is introduced.
